A sway bar links the left and right wheels at one end of a 4x4, so when one side compresses in a corner, the bar twists and resists body roll. On a loaded or lifted 4x4, that matters more than on a standard vehicle. Roof racks, canopies, drawers, water tanks and towing all raise the centre of gravity or add weight, which increases lean in corners and when changing direction. An upgraded sway bar can help keep the vehicle flatter and more settled, while relocation parts restore the bar's geometry after a lift. Use the vehicle search to find sway bars to suit your E90, E91, E92, E93 xDrive (Excl. M3) 3.

What Does a Sway Bar Do on Your E90, E91, E92, E93 xDrive (Excl. M3) 3?

A sway bar, also called an anti-roll bar or stabiliser bar, is a steel bar that runs across the vehicle, mounted to the chassis through bushes and connected to the suspension on each side by links. When the vehicle drives straight over even ground, both sides of the suspension move together, and the bar simply rotates in its bushes without twisting.

When the vehicle leans in a corner, the outside suspension compresses and the inside suspension extends. The bar resists that difference by twisting along its length, pushing the inside of the vehicle down and holding the outside up. The result is less body roll and a vehicle that feels more stable and predictable, particularly when cornering, changing lanes quickly or driving on winding roads with a high load.

E90, E91, E92, E93 xDrive (Excl. M3) 3 Front or Rear Sway Bar?

Most 4x4s have a front sway bar, and many also have a rear bar. The front and rear bars both reduce body roll, but they affect the vehicle's balance differently. Stiffening the front bar tends to make the front end resist roll more, while stiffening the rear bar shifts more of the roll resistance to the rear.

On a 4x4 that carries heavy loads at the rear, such as a canopy, drawers or a camper trailer's tow ball download, a rear sway bar upgrade is often where the greatest difference is felt, because that is where the weight sits. Front bar upgrades can help vehicles with heavy front accessories such as bull bars and winches. Some owners upgrade both to keep the vehicle balanced. The right choice depends on where the weight is on your vehicle and how it handles now.

Does Your E90, E91, E92, E93 xDrive (Excl. M3) 3 Need a Heavier Sway Bar for Touring or Towing?

A heavier sway bar helps when added weight raises the centre of gravity and the vehicle leans or wallows in corners. Common examples include a loaded roof rack or rooftop tent, a canopy with drawers and water tanks, and towing a caravan or camper trailer. These loads make body roll more noticeable and can make the vehicle feel top-heavy, particularly in crosswinds or on uneven roads.

A thicker sway bar twists less for the same force, so it resists roll more firmly. That can help the vehicle feel more stable and composed when loaded. A sway bar does not change how much the vehicle can legally carry. Its gross vehicle mass and towing limits still apply, and springs and shocks matched to the load are just as important for overall control.

Adjustable or Non-Adjustable E90, E91, E92, E93 xDrive (Excl. M3) 3 Sway Bars?

Non-adjustable sway bars are made with a single stiffness. They suit vehicles that are driven in a fairly consistent configuration, where one setting works well most of the time.

Adjustable sway bars have more than one mounting position for the links, or a blade design that can be rotated, so the bar's stiffness can be changed. A softer setting can suit an empty vehicle or daily driving, while a firmer setting can suit touring with a full load or towing. Adjustable bars suit owners whose vehicle carries very different loads at different times and who want to tune the bar to suit.

E90, E91, E92, E93 xDrive (Excl. M3) 3 Sway Bars and Off-Road Articulation

A sway bar's job is to resist the two sides of the suspension moving differently. That is exactly what happens off-road when one wheel climbs an obstacle and the other drops into a hole. A stiffer sway bar resists this articulation more, which can reduce how far each wheel can travel on uneven ground.

This is a trade-off rather than a reason to avoid a heavier bar. For a 4x4 that spends most of its time touring on roads and graded tracks with a heavy load, the stability of a heavier bar is often the priority. For a vehicle used mainly for slow, technical off-road driving, retaining articulation may matter more. Quick-release sway bar links, which let the bar be disconnected for off-road sections, are one way some owners balance both needs. Choose the bar to suit how you drive.

Do You Need Sway Bar Relocation After a E90, E91, E92, E93 xDrive (Excl. M3) 3 Lift?

Often. A lift raises the chassis relative to the suspension, so the gap between the sway bar's chassis mounts and its link mounts on the suspension grows. With the original mounting points and links, the bar is pulled down at an angle and the links can end up at a steep angle.

That can reduce how well the bar works, make the ride feel firmer as the bar is preloaded, and in some cases cause the bar or links to contact other components. Sway bar relocation kits use brackets or spacers to lower the bar's mounting points, restoring its position relative to the suspension at the new ride height. Extended sway bar links are another way to restore the geometry, and some vehicles use both.

E90, E91, E92, E93 xDrive (Excl. M3) 3 Sway Bar Brackets and Service Parts

A sway bar is mounted to the chassis by brackets, with bushes inside each bracket that let the bar rotate. Over time, these bushes wear, allowing the bar to move in its mounts and produce clunks over bumps. Brackets can also bend or crack, particularly on a 4x4 driven off-road. Service parts, including bushes, brackets and link hardware, let worn parts be renewed without replacing the whole bar. When fitting an upgraded bar, check that the brackets and bushes suit its diameter, since a thicker bar needs matching bushes.

Signs Your E90, E91, E92, E93 xDrive (Excl. M3) 3 Sway Bar or Links Are Worn

Common signs include clunks or knocks from the front or rear over bumps, particularly when one wheel hits a bump on its own. You may notice more body roll in corners than you used to, a vague or wallowing feel when changing direction, or rattles over rough roads.

Check the sway bar bushes for cracking, splitting or a loose fit around the bar, and the links for worn joints, torn boots or bends. A bent bar or cracked bracket is another clear sign. Worn suspension bushes, ball joints and shock absorbers can produce similar symptoms, so have the vehicle inspected to find the cause.

Fitting a E90, E91, E92, E93 xDrive (Excl. M3) 3 Sway Bar: An Overview

Sway bars are usually fitted by unbolting the existing bar from its brackets and links, then installing the new bar with its bushes, brackets and links. To avoid preloading the bar, the links are generally connected with the vehicle's weight on its wheels or with both sides of the suspension at the same height. All fasteners must be tightened to the manufacturer's torque specifications. After fitting, check that the bar and links clear the tyres, brake lines, springs and other components through full suspension travel and steering lock. Professional installation is recommended.

Find the Right Sway Bar for Your E90, E91, E92, E93 xDrive (Excl. M3) 3 with Formula 4x4

Sway bars are part of our suspension parts range, and replacement sway bar brackets fix cracked or rusted mounts.

Start by considering where the weight sits on your E90, E91, E92, E93 xDrive (Excl. M3) 3 and how it handles now, whether loaded, towing or empty. Decide between front, rear or both, and whether an adjustable bar suits the way you use the vehicle. If the vehicle has been lifted, check whether relocation parts are needed too. Search by your E90, E91, E92, E93 xDrive (Excl. M3) 3 to find 4x4 sway bars to suit it. If you are unsure what your 4x4 needs, contact the Formula 4x4 team.
