Differential bushes are the mounts that hold a differential in place on vehicles where the diff is bolted to the chassis rather than built into a solid axle. On most independent front suspension 4WDs, the front diff hangs from the chassis on bushes, and those bushes carry every bit of torque that goes to the front wheels. When they wear, the diff moves under load, the CV shafts and tailshaft work at changing angles, and the clunks and vibration follow. On a lifted 4WD working in low range or towing a heavy trailer, the diff mounts take more punishment than almost any other bush on the vehicle. Use the vehicle search to find differential bushes to suit your LJ Series 1 DISCOVERY.

What Do LJ Series 1 DISCOVERY Differential Bushes Do?

Holding the Diff Against Torque

A differential receives torque from the tailshaft and sends it out to the wheels. As it does, the diff housing tries to rotate in the opposite direction. The mounts resist that rotation. Under hard acceleration, in low range or when towing, the reaction force is substantial, and the bushes are what stop the diff from twisting on its mounts.

Keeping the Driveline in Line

The diff's position sets the angles of the CV shafts on each side and the tailshaft at the front. If the diff moves, those angles change. Small, controlled movement is normal. Excessive movement from worn bushes can make the joints work harder than they should and can cause vibration and clunking.

Isolating Noise and Vibration

Gear noise and driveline vibration travel through the diff housing. The bushes absorb much of it before it reaches the chassis, which keeps the cabin quieter.

Where Are Differential Bushes Used on Your LJ Series 1 DISCOVERY?

Independent Front Suspension

On most IFS 4WDs and utes, the front diff is a separate unit mounted to the chassis through two or three bushed mounts. The CV shafts run from the diff out to each front wheel. These front diff mounts are the most common differential bushes on a modern 4WD.

Independent Rear Suspension

Some 4WDs and SUVs with independent rear suspension mount the rear diff to the chassis or a subframe in a similar way. The principle is the same, with the mounts carrying the drive torque to the rear wheels.

Solid Axles

On a solid axle, the diff is built into the axle housing, so there are no separate diff mounts. The bushes on the arms that bolt to the axle housing, such as the radius arm or trailing arm bushes, locate the whole axle instead. Some of those bushes are offset to change caster after a lift, which is a different job from a diff mount.

What Types of LJ Series 1 DISCOVERY Differential Bushes Are There?

Rubber Mounts

Factory diff mounts are typically rubber. Rubber isolates gear noise and vibration well. Under constant torque loads and heat, though, it can soften, crack or tear, and some designs have voids that let the diff move more as the rubber ages.

Polyurethane Mounts

Polyurethane diff bushes are generally firmer and hold the diff more steadily under load. They tend to resist heat and oil better and can reduce the clunk and shunt that comes from a diff moving on soft mounts. The trade-off can be a little more gear noise and vibration in the cabin.

LJ Series 1 DISCOVERY Void Fillers and Inserts

Some factory mounts have voids built into the rubber. Inserts or void fillers can firm up those mounts without replacing the whole bush. They are a lighter-touch option where the mount is still in good condition but moves more than wanted.

How Do You Know LJ Series 1 DISCOVERY Differential Bushes Are Worn?

The most common sign is a clunk or thump when the drive takes up: taking off from a stop, shifting between drive and reverse, or engaging four-wheel drive. On IFS 4WDs, a clunk from the front when engaging 4WD or turning under load in low range often points to worn front diff mounts.

Vibration is another. A worn mount can let the diff sit out of line, which changes the CV and tailshaft angles and can cause a vibration that comes and goes with speed or load.

Noise can also change. A diff that moves on worn mounts can transmit more gear whine or knocking into the cabin.

On inspection, worn diff bushes show cracked, split or torn rubber, a mount that has separated from its sleeve, or a diff that sits visibly lower or crooked. Moving the diff housing with a pry bar can show how much it shifts on its mounts.

CV joints, tailshaft universal joints, centre bearings and gearbox mounts can cause similar symptoms, so a full driveline inspection is worth doing first.

LJ Series 1 DISCOVERY Lifted, Loaded and Towing Considerations

Lifted IFS LJ Series 1 DISCOVERY

Lifting an IFS 4WD steepens the angle of the front CV shafts. To bring those angles back, many lifts use a diff drop kit that lowers the front diff on its mounts. That puts the diff mounts in a different position and can change how they load. Worn bushes in a lifted setup can let the diff move further than the geometry allows for, which can add strain on the CVs.

LJ Series 1 DISCOVERY Towing and Low Range

Towing and low-range work put the highest torque through the diff, and the mounts carry the reaction. A 4WD that tows regularly or spends a lot of time in low range will generally wear its diff mounts faster than one that stays on the road.

Loaded LJ Series 1 DISCOVERY

A heavily loaded 4WD needs more torque to move, particularly up hills and off road, and that increases the load through the diff mounts. Bull bars and winches also add weight around the front diff area on many vehicles.

What Comes With LJ Series 1 DISCOVERY Differential Bushes?

Kits vary by vehicle and mount. Some cover a single mounting point, others a full set for the front or rear diff. Sleeves, washers and lubricant may or may not be included, and bolts are often supplied separately. Check the product details for which mounts the kit covers and what is included.

Should You Replace the LJ Series 1 DISCOVERY Bushes or Something Else?

New bushes are usually the fix when the diff mounts themselves are worn but the diff, the mounting brackets and the chassis mounts are sound. That covers most clunks and shunts from a diff moving on its mounts.

Other parts need attention when a mounting bracket is cracked or bent, when the chassis mount is damaged or corroded, or when the clunk turns out to come from the CVs, the tailshaft or the diff itself. Replacing the bushes will not fix worn CV joints or a diff with internal wear, so a proper diagnosis comes first.

Fitting LJ Series 1 DISCOVERY Differential Bushes

Replacing diff bushes usually means supporting the diff while its mounts are removed, and on some vehicles lowering the diff partway, so it is a job for a qualified technician. The vehicle is supported on rated stands, and the diff is supported with a suitable jack or cradle before any mounting bolts are removed.

The old bushes are pressed or pulled out, the housings cleaned and checked, and the new bushes fitted with any sleeves or lubricant supplied. The diff is raised back into position, and the mounting bolts are tightened with the diff in its correct position and torqued to specification. Where front suspension components were disturbed, a wheel alignment is required, and a road test, including 4WD engagement and some low-speed turns under load, confirms the result.

Find the Right LJ Series 1 DISCOVERY Differential Bushes with Formula 4x4

Use the vehicle search, then confirm whether the vehicle has independent front or rear suspension with a separate diff. Identify which mounts are worn. Check the product details for which mounts the kit covers.

Clunks from an IFS diff under load usually mean worn mounts, and diff bushes sit within our suspension bushes range.
