A GCM upgrade increases a vehicle's gross combination mass, the maximum combined weight of the loaded tow vehicle and its loaded trailer. It is aimed at owners who tow heavy caravans, campers, boats or equipment trailers and find that the combined weight of their setup is close to, or above, the vehicle's factory limit. A GCM upgrade kit pairs suspension components with the engineering and compliance process needed to approve a higher rating. Use the vehicle search to find GCM upgrades to suit your TOYOTA LAND CRUISER.

What Is GCM on Your TOYOTA LAND CRUISER?

Gross combination mass, or GCM, is the maximum allowable combined weight of a fully loaded tow vehicle and a fully loaded trailer, as set by the vehicle manufacturer. It includes everything: the vehicle, its accessories, fuel, passengers and cargo, plus the trailer and everything in it.

The factory GCM is listed in the owner's manual and often on the vehicle's compliance or specification documentation. It sits alongside other limits, including the gross vehicle mass, the braked towing capacity and the maximum tow ball download. A vehicle can be within some of these limits and over another, so each one needs to be checked separately when planning a towing setup.

What Is a TOYOTA LAND CRUISER GCM Upgrade?

A GCM upgrade raises the vehicle's approved gross combination mass above the factory figure. It involves more than fitting stronger suspension. The upgrade needs to be engineered for the specific vehicle and approved through the relevant compliance process before the higher figure can legally be used.

The suspension components in a GCM upgrade kit help the vehicle carry and control the extra combined load, keeping ride height and handling consistent when towing heavy. The compliance process is what turns that capability into a legal rating. Without both, the factory GCM still applies, regardless of what suspension the vehicle has fitted.

TOYOTA LAND CRUISER GCM vs GVM: What's the Difference?

Gross vehicle mass, or GVM, is the maximum loaded weight of the vehicle on its own, including accessories, fuel, passengers and cargo, but not the trailer. GCM covers the vehicle and the trailer together.

The two limits interact. When a trailer is hitched, part of its weight presses down on the tow ball, and that download counts toward the vehicle's GVM. A heavily loaded vehicle towing a heavy trailer can therefore exceed its GVM, its GCM or both. An upgrade may change one figure or both, depending on how the kit has been engineered and approved. Before choosing an upgrade, work out which limit your setup actually exceeds, since a GVM upgrade does not automatically raise GCM, and a GCM upgrade does not automatically raise GVM.

How the TOYOTA LAND CRUISER Towing Limits Fit Together

When towing, several limits apply at the same time, and the lowest one sets what you can legally carry. The vehicle must stay within its GVM, including the tow ball download. Each axle must stay within its own axle load limit. The trailer must stay within the vehicle's braked towing capacity and the towbar's rating, and the tow ball download must stay within its maximum.

GCM then caps the total of everything combined. On many vehicles, a heavily loaded tow vehicle cannot tow its full braked towing capacity without exceeding GCM, because the combined weight would be too high. A GCM upgrade is designed to address that specific limit. Weighing the vehicle and trailer separately at a public weighbridge, fully loaded as you travel, is the most reliable way to see which limit you are closest to.

What a TOYOTA LAND CRUISER GCM Upgrade Kit Typically Includes

GCM upgrade kits are engineered for a specific vehicle, so their contents vary. They typically include upgraded springs rated for the higher loads, matched shock absorbers to control those springs, and the documentation and compliance information needed for the approval process. Some kits include additional supporting hardware where the vehicle requires it. Check the listed contents for your vehicle's kit before ordering.

TOYOTA LAND CRUISER GCM Upgrade Kits With Lift

Some GCM upgrade kits combine the higher rating with a suspension lift. A lifted kit raises ride height for extra ground clearance and room for larger tyres, while the springs and shocks are rated for the upgraded combined mass. This suits owners who tow heavy and also drive off-road. The lift height in a GCM kit is part of the engineered package, so it should not be changed afterwards without checking how that affects the approval.

TOYOTA LAND CRUISER Adjustable Remote Reservoir Options

Some GCM upgrade kits use adjustable remote reservoir shock absorbers. The external reservoir holds extra oil, which helps the shocks resist heat build-up during long periods of heavy towing on rough or corrugated roads. Adjustability lets the damping be tuned to suit different loads, such as towing compared with driving unhitched. These options suit owners who tow long distances on unsealed roads, where shock absorber temperature is a real concern.

Is a TOYOTA LAND CRUISER GCM Upgrade Legal in Australia?

A GCM upgrade can be legal when an approved kit is fitted and the vehicle goes through the required compliance process. That process varies between states and territories, and it can also depend on whether the upgrade is carried out before or after the vehicle is first registered.

Upgrades completed before registration are generally handled as part of the vehicle's original compliance. Upgrades completed after registration usually require engineering approval and certification under the requirements of the state or territory where the vehicle is registered, and the new rating may need to be recorded with the registration authority. Check the process for your vehicle and state with the installer and your registration authority before committing, and keep all compliance documents with the vehicle.

Does a GCM Upgrade Increase Your TOYOTA LAND CRUISER Towing Capacity?

Not necessarily. Braked towing capacity, the maximum weight of a braked trailer the vehicle may tow, is a separate rating from GCM. So are the towbar's rating and the maximum tow ball download. A GCM upgrade raises the combined limit, which can let a heavily loaded vehicle tow closer to its existing towing capacity, but it does not automatically raise the towing capacity itself.

Before relying on an upgrade for a particular trailer, confirm all of the relevant figures for your setup after the upgrade: GCM, GVM, braked towing capacity, towbar rating, tow ball download and axle limits.

Other Things to Check Before Upgrading Your TOYOTA LAND CRUISER

Tyres must be rated for the loads they carry, so check that your tyres' load rating suits the upgraded figures. If an upgrade also raises the vehicle's GVM above 4,500 kg, the driver may need a light rigid licence rather than a car licence, depending on the state. Brakes, towbar, trailer coupling and wiring should all be suited to the loads you plan to tow. Changes to the vehicle can also affect manufacturer warranty coverage, so check how an upgrade is treated before fitting.

Do You Need to Tell Your Insurer About Your TOYOTA LAND CRUISER GCM Upgrade?

Generally, yes. Most insurers expect modifications that change a vehicle's ratings or suspension to be declared, and a GCM upgrade does both. Failing to declare a modification can affect a claim. Requirements vary between insurers and policies, so contact your insurer before or immediately after the upgrade, and keep the compliance documentation in case it is requested.

Fitting a TOYOTA LAND CRUISER GCM Upgrade: An Overview

GCM upgrades should be fitted by a qualified suspension technician familiar with the kit and the compliance process. Fitting involves replacing the suspension components specified in the kit, setting ride height, carrying out a wheel alignment and completing any inspections or checks the approval process requires.

The compliance paperwork is as important as the physical installation. Make sure the installer explains what documentation is produced, what needs to be lodged with the registration authority, and when the upgraded figures can legally be used. Until the process is complete, the factory ratings still apply.
