Read moreEngine mount bushes and inserts control how much the engine moves on its mounts, while alternator and intake manifold bushes support components bolted to the engine. These are bush kits and inserts that fit into or alongside existing mounts and brackets, not complete engine mounts. When engine bushes wear, the usual results are clunks when taking off or changing gear, extra vibration and belt or alignment problems. Fitment is specific to each engine and mount design, so use the vehicle search to find engine bushes to suit your VW JETTA.
What Do VW JETTA Engine Mount Bushes Do?
An engine produces torque that tries to twist it in the opposite direction to the crankshaft's rotation. Every time you accelerate, lift off or change gear, the engine rocks on its mounts. Engine mounts hold the engine in the vehicle, resist that rocking, and isolate the cabin from the engine's vibration.
The bush is the flexible part of the mount that does this work. It sits between the metal bracket attached to the engine and the bracket attached to the chassis or body. A softer bush absorbs more vibration but allows more movement. A firmer bush limits movement but passes more vibration through to the cabin. Every engine mount design is a balance between the two.
How VW JETTA Engine Mounts Are Arranged
Most engines sit on two or three main mounts that carry the engine's weight, plus a mount at the transmission. Many engines also have an additional mount whose job is mainly to control rocking rather than carry weight. These are often called steady mounts, torque mounts or torque rods, depending on the vehicle.
Steady mounts work hardest when the engine is under load. They resist the engine's twisting motion under acceleration and braking, which is why they are usually the first mounts to wear and the most common location for insert bushes. The exact arrangement varies widely between engines, and some engines combine weight-carrying and steadying roles in the same mount.
Signs Your VW JETTA Engine Mount Bushes May Be Worn
Common signs include a clunk or thump when taking off from a standstill, when shifting between drive and reverse, or when changing gear in a manual. You may also feel more vibration through the floor, seats or steering wheel at idle, or notice that the engine visibly lifts or rocks more than it used to when revved with the vehicle stationary and the handbrake on.
With the bonnet open, worn mount bushes may show cracks, splits or tearing in the rubber, or a gap where the bush has separated from its metal sleeve. Fluid-filled mounts can leak, leaving oily residue around the mount. Excessive engine movement can also cause other parts to contact each other, such as the exhaust touching a heat shield or the fan coming close to its shroud.
Other Possible Causes
These symptoms are not unique to engine mount bushes. A worn transmission mount, loose exhaust hangers or heat shields, worn driveline components such as universal joints or CV joints, and loose fasteners can all produce clunks and vibration. Engine misfires can also cause rough running that feels like a mount problem. Have a technician confirm the cause before replacing parts, since new bushes will not fix a driveline or engine fault.
VW JETTA Insert Bushes or Complete Mounts: What's the Difference?
A complete engine mount is a full assembly, usually with metal brackets bonded to a rubber or fluid-filled core. When it wears, the whole assembly is replaced. Insert bushes take a different approach. They fit into the voids or openings in an existing mount, or replace the bush within a mount or steady bar, to firm up the mount and reduce engine movement.
Inserts suit mounts that are still structurally sound but allow more movement than the owner wants, or where the original bush has worn but the brackets are in good condition. They are not a fix for a mount that has torn completely, separated from its bracket or leaked its fluid. In those cases, the complete mount usually needs replacing. Inspect the mount carefully before deciding which approach suits it.
Rubber or Polyurethane VW JETTA Engine Bushes?
Factory engine mount bushes are usually rubber, or rubber combined with a fluid-filled chamber, because rubber absorbs vibration well and keeps the cabin quiet. Over time, heat, oil and constant movement cause rubber to harden, crack and sag.
Polyurethane bushes and inserts are firmer, so they reduce engine movement and resist oil and heat. The trade-off is vibration. A firmer engine bush transmits more engine vibration and noise into the cabin, particularly at idle and low engine speeds. How noticeable this is depends on the engine, the mount location and the bush design. Consider whether you value reduced engine movement more than a quiet idle before choosing.
VW JETTA Alternator Bushes
On many engines, the alternator mounts on a pivot bolt and an adjusting bracket, with bushes at the pivot. Those bushes locate the alternator so its pulley stays aligned with the rest of the belt drive, and on adjustable setups they allow the alternator to pivot for belt tensioning while holding firm once tightened.
When alternator bushes wear, the alternator can move slightly on its mounts. That can let the belt run out of line, squeal under load, wear unevenly on one edge or lose tension. Belt, pulley and tensioner faults can cause similar symptoms, so check the whole belt drive when diagnosing belt noise or wear.
VW JETTA Intake Manifold Bushes
On some engines, the intake manifold or associated components are mounted with bushes or isolators rather than bolted rigidly in place. These bushes reduce the vibration passed through the manifold and allow for the expansion and contraction that comes with engine temperature changes. When they harden or crack, the result can be rattles, vibration noise or loosened mountings. Intake manifold bush arrangements are specific to the engine design, so check the part matches your engine before ordering.
Why Engine Mounts Work Harder in Your VW JETTA
4WDs ask more of their engine mounts than most vehicles. Low-range gearing multiplies engine torque, so the engine twists harder on its mounts when climbing steep or rocky tracks. Rough tracks and corrugations add constant vertical movement, and towing heavy loads keeps the engine under sustained load for long periods.
All of this accelerates wear on engine mount bushes. A mount that allows too much movement can also affect components around it, such as exhaust joints, radiator hoses and the clearance between the fan and its shroud. Including engine mounts in regular inspections helps catch wear before it causes other problems.
Fitting VW JETTA Engine Mount Bushes: An Overview
Fitting engine mount bushes or inserts generally involves supporting the engine securely so the mount can be unloaded, removing the mount or steady bar, and fitting the new bushes or inserts. Some insert bushes can be fitted with the mount in place, while others require the mount or bar to be removed and the old bush pressed out.
The engine must be supported with suitable equipment before any mount is unbolted. Follow the vehicle's service instructions, tighten all fasteners to the manufacturer's torque specification and check that nothing is fouling once the engine is lowered back onto its mounts. Because the work involves supporting the engine, it should be carried out by a qualified technician.
Choosing the Right VW JETTA Engine Bush Kit
Engine bushes are specific to the engine and mount design. Mount shape, bush size and the position of each mount vary widely between makes, models, engines and model years, and a kit designed for one mount will not fit another. Confirm your vehicle's make, model, year and engine before ordering, and check which mount the kit is designed for.
Identify which mount is worn before buying. Replacing the bushes in a steady mount will not fix a worn main mount, and the reverse. A technician can usually pinpoint the worn mount by watching the engine move while it is loaded against the brakes.
