A worn N13 PULSAR suspension bush can be difficult to remove without damaging the surrounding housing. A 4WD bush press kit gives you a controlled way to push the old bush out and install its replacement, without relying on hammers, sockets or improvised pressing tools.

The SuperPro suspension bush press tool available through Formula 4x4 uses threaded rods, stepped plates and mild steel sleeves to handle bush removal and installation. It is designed for suspension work where the correct tooling can be positioned around the component, with installation instructions available to help you set up the press for the job.

What Is a Bushing Press Tool Kit for Your N13 PULSAR?

A bushing press tool kit is a set of mechanical tools used to remove and install interference-fit suspension bushes. An interference fit means the bush's outer shell is slightly larger than the bore it fits into, creating a tight connection that holds it in place.

That fit is also what makes removal difficult. Old bushes can become seized in their housings through corrosion or years of exposure to dirt, moisture and road conditions. Hammering them out can distort the housing, damage its edges or apply force in the wrong direction.

A suspension bush press provides a more controlled approach. Press sleeves support the surrounding component while force is applied to the bush along its intended removal or installation path.

The SuperPro kit is particularly relevant to workshops and 4WD owners replacing suspension bushes in control arms and other compatible suspension components. Its suitability depends on the bush construction, housing dimensions and available working space.

How Does a Draw-Type Bush Press Work?

A draw-type bush press uses threaded rods, nuts and pressing sleeves to generate force mechanically. Rather than striking the bush, tightening the assembly draws the pressing components together, gradually moving the bush through its housing.

For removal, a pushing sleeve bears against the appropriate part of the old bush while a larger receiving sleeve provides space for it to move out. For installation, the arrangement is adjusted to press the replacement bush into position without loading surfaces that could be damaged.

The SuperPro kit uses threaded rods with bearings to assist operation, alongside stepped plates and interchangeable sleeves. This allows different pressing arrangements to be assembled for compatible bush sizes.

The main advantage is control. You can apply force progressively, monitor whether the bush is moving straight and stop if resistance suggests something is incorrectly positioned.

Choosing the Right Bush Press Sleeve Size for Your N13 PULSAR

Sleeve selection depends on the dimensions of both the bush and its housing.

For removal, the pushing sleeve generally needs to contact the outer shell without catching the housing bore. The receiving sleeve must have enough internal clearance for the bush to pass through.

The SuperPro kit includes 18 individually numbered mild steel sleeves covering a range of common bush dimensions. The sleeves are arranged in 5 mm increments, and SuperPro specifies that individual sleeves can be replaced.

Measure the components before selecting a sleeve. Some applications may require specialised tooling or adaptors rather than a standard sleeve.

Press Tool Kit or Hydraulic Press: Which Suits the Job on Your N13 PULSAR?

Both tools can remove and install suspension bushes, but they work differently.

A draw-type bush press is portable and generates force through its threaded assembly. It is useful where a suspension component can be accessed without placing it directly in a workshop press.

A hydraulic shop press uses hydraulic pressure to move a ram against the component. It is generally suited to components that have been removed from the vehicle and can be securely supported on the press bed.

The distinction matters when working on 4WD suspension, where larger components, restricted access and stubborn bushes can make pressing difficult.

A draw-type kit may be convenient for accessible bush housings, but it is not necessarily a substitute for a hydraulic press. Some bushes require more force or a different support arrangement than threaded tooling can safely provide.

Workshops often use both methods depending on the component. The deciding factors are the bush's dimensions, the force required, accessibility and whether the housing can be supported correctly.

Do N13 PULSAR Polyurethane Bushes Need to Be Pressed In?

Not every polyurethane suspension bush needs a press.

Some polyurethane bushes use a two-piece construction that can be installed by hand once the old bush and any required outer shell have been removed. Other designs retain a metal outer shell or have an interference fit that requires mechanical pressing.

The important distinction is how the replacement bush is designed to locate in its housing.

A polyurethane bush supplied with a separate inner sleeve may require lubrication and assembly rather than force through a press. Applying excessive pressure to the polyurethane itself can deform the material or damage the bush.

Metal-shelled bushes generally need force applied to the appropriate outer shell, not through the inner sleeve or flexible material.

SuperPro designs its press tooling to assist with compatible polyurethane bush installations, but that does not mean every SuperPro bush should be pressed.

Check the replacement bush's fitting instructions before starting. They should establish whether pressing is required, which components must be retained or removed, and where installation force should be applied.

Can You Replace N13 PULSAR Suspension Bushes Without Removing the Suspension Arm?

Sometimes, provided there is enough clearance to position the tool and support the bush housing.

A draw-type press can be useful for certain suspension bushes because it does not require the entire assembly to fit beneath a hydraulic press. This may reduce disassembly when the mounting position and surrounding components allow suitable access.

However, there are practical limitations.

The threaded rod must have enough room to pass through the assembly, and the receiving sleeve needs clearance on the opposite side. Nearby brackets, suspension links or chassis components can prevent the press from sitting squarely.

Removing the suspension arm may provide better access, particularly where the bush is seized or difficult to align. It also makes it easier to inspect the housing for corrosion, deformation or previous damage.

The workshop procedure for the specific suspension assembly should determine whether in-vehicle replacement is appropriate. A portable tool does not automatically make every bush suitable for on-vehicle removal.

How Do You Use a Bush Press Safely?

A bush press can generate substantial force, even when operated by hand. Incorrect positioning can damage the tool, bush housing or surrounding suspension components.

The SuperPro kit uses mild steel sleeves designed to deform or crush under excessive loading rather than fracture in the manner of some hardened tooling. This is a useful design consideration, but it does not eliminate the risks associated with pressing.

Before beginning suspension bush work:

  • Support the vehicle securely. Use appropriately rated lifting and support equipment.
  • Wear eye protection. Pressing components can move unexpectedly if the assembly slips or fails.
  • Keep the tooling aligned. The threaded rod and sleeves should remain square to the bush housing.
  • Inspect the equipment. Check rods, nuts, bearings and sleeves for wear, distortion or damaged threads.
  • Stop if the bush binds. Excessive resistance can indicate incorrect sleeve positioning, corrosion or a bush that requires a different removal method.

On reassembly, tighten suspension fasteners to the manufacturer's specifications, observing any required normal ride-height tightening procedure. Suspension work that changes or disturbs wheel alignment settings should be followed by an appropriate alignment check.

SuperPro provides fitting instructions for its press tool kit. Review these before use rather than treating every suspension bush as an identical pressing job.
