itself can legally weigh, but its 3500kg braked towing capacity and its GCM stay at the factory ratings. Where it helps is towing a lighter trailer with a heavily loaded ute, and keeping the Hilux level and stable with a heavy towball load. It can even reduce the trailer weight you can tow at full load.

It’s one of the most common things we hear at dealer counters. A Hilux owner wants to tow a bigger van and figures a GVM upgrade will let them. It won’t raise the towing number, but it can still make a big difference to how much you can legally carry while towing, and to how well the Hilux handles a trailer. Here’s how it works, with real Hilux numbers. See the full range of GVM upgrade kits for the Hilux.

Why a GVM Upgrade Doesn’t Change Hilux Towing Capacity

Search “does GVM upgrade increase towing capacity” and you’ll find plenty of mixed answers, so start with the three separate ratings that control what your Hilux can tow, and a GVM upgrade touches none of them unless the kit has been specifically engineered and approved to do so.

Toyota Hilux towing capacity sits at 3500kg braked on most 4x4 N80 and N90 models, with a 350kg maximum towball download. Our GVM kits raise the vehicle’s rated mass to 3501kg on the N80 and 3571kg on the N90, while the trailer ratings and GCM stay where Toyota set them.

How GCM Limits Hilux Towing at Full Load

GCM is the ceiling on everything combined, ute and trailer together. Subtract the trailer’s loaded weight from GCM and you get the maximum the Hilux can weigh while towing it.

On an N80, 2350kg is barely above the kerb weight of most dual cabs, so towing the full 3500kg leaves very little for passengers, accessories and the towball download. Adding GVM doesn’t help here, because GCM is the limit you hit first.

When a GVM Upgrade Does Help You Tow

A GVM upgrade pays off when you tow a lighter trailer behind a heavily loaded Hilux. That’s a very common setup: a touring ute with a full fit-out pulling a camper trailer or small van.

Example: N80 Hilux towing a 2500kg camper

•             GCM of 5850kg minus a 2500kg trailer leaves 3350kg for the loaded Hilux.

•             The factory GVM caps the Hilux at 3050kg, so 300kg of that GCM headroom can’t be used.

•             With a 3501kg GVM upgrade, the Hilux can legally weigh up to 3350kg, and that 300kg becomes usable payload.

The lighter your trailer, the more of the upgrade you can use. Here’s the general pattern for an N80 Hilux 4x4.

Can a GVM Upgrade Reduce Towing Capacity?

At full load it can reduce the trailer weight you’re allowed to tow. If you use the extra payload, the Hilux gets heavier, and under a fixed GCM a heavier ute leaves less for the trailer. An N80 loaded to 3400kg can only tow 2450kg before reaching its 5850kg GCM.

Your braked towing capacity stays at 3500kg throughout. The combined limit is simply doing its job, so weigh both the Hilux and the trailer before a big trip.

How a GVM Upgrade Improves Towing Performance

Even where it doesn’t add legal towing weight, a Formula 4x4 GVM upgrade makes a loaded Hilux a far better tow vehicle.

•             Less rear sag: Heavy duty leaf springs hold the rear up under towball download, keeping headlights aimed and weight on the front tyres for steering traction.

•             Steadier control: Shocks valved for the higher load cut pitching and vehicle sway, so the Hilux and trailer settle faster over dips and bumps.

•             Consistent damping on long hauls: Big bore shocks, and the remote reservoirs on our F4R kits, manage heat on long corrugated runs where standard shocks fade.

•             Tunable ride: F4R kits let you firm up compression and rebound for towing, then soften them for unladen driving.

What If You Need to Tow More?

If your setup is limited by GCM rather than GVM, the answer is reducing combined weight, choosing a lighter trailer, or looking at a GCM upgrade where one is approved for your vehicle. Our current GCM upgrades cover the LandCruiser 300 Series, while our Hilux kits are GVM upgrades.

Before you buy anything, load up the way you travel and weigh the Hilux and trailer separately at a public weighbridge, including each axle. That tells you which limit you’re actually closest to.

Toyota Hilux GVM Upgrade and Towing Capacity FAQs

Looking for more information about how a GVM upgrade affects Toyota Hilux towing capacity, towball download and GCM? Below we answer the most commonly asked questions.

Does a GVM upgrade increase towing capacity?

No, a GVM upgrade raises how much the vehicle itself can weigh. Braked towing capacity, towball download and GCM stay at the factory ratings.

What is the towing capacity of a Toyota Hilux?

The towing capacity Toyota Hilux 4x4 owners get on most N80 and N90 models is 3500kg braked and 750kg unbraked, with a 350kg maximum towball download.

What is a GVM upgrade towing capacity figure?

There’s no separate towing figure for a GVM upgrade on our Hilux kits. The vehicle keeps its factory braked towing capacity, towball limit and GCM, and only the GVM changes.

Can I increase my Hilux towing capacity?

Braked towing capacity on light vehicles like the Hilux isn’t increased by our GVM kits. Your options are reducing combined weight, a lighter trailer, or a GCM upgrade where one is approved.

Does a GVM upgrade reduce towing capacity?

Your rated towing capacity stays the same, but if you load the Hilux heavier, the fixed GCM leaves less room for the trailer.

Is a GVM upgrade worth it for towing a caravan?

Yes, if your Hilux is heavily loaded and the van is light enough to stay under GCM. It also improves stability and reduces rear sag with a heavy towball load.

What is the 2026 Hilux towing capacity?

The 2026 N90 Hilux 4x4 is rated to tow 3500kg braked, with a GCM of 6300kg.
