Read moreAlignment bushes are suspension bushes built to move a pivot point, not just cushion it. A standard bush holds the arm in the factory position. An alignment bush offsets the bolt or sleeve inside it, so fitting it shifts the arm slightly and changes the wheel's angle. On a 4WD, that small shift can bring camber or caster back into range after a lift, take up the change a heavy front load has made, or give an alignment technician the adjustment the factory setup does not have. Use the vehicle search to find alignment bushes to suit your Y SERIES GTS.
What Do Y SERIES GTS Alignment Bushes Do?
Every suspension arm pivots on bushes, and those pivot points set the geometry. Where the arm mounts decides where the wheel sits, and where the wheel sits decides camber, caster and toe.
A conventional bush has its inner sleeve in the centre. An alignment bush moves that sleeve off centre, or uses a cam, eccentric insert or slotted sleeve that lets its position be changed. Moving the pivot by a few millimetres moves the arm, and moving the arm changes the wheel's angle.
The geometry itself is simple. Move the inner end of a lower control arm outwards and the bottom of the wheel moves out, which changes camber. Rotate a radius arm's axle end and the whole axle tilts, which changes caster. The bush is the tool that makes that small movement repeatable.
Why Would Your Y SERIES GTS Need Alignment Bushes?
After a Y SERIES GTS Lift
A lift changes the angle of every suspension arm. On an independent front end, the control arms drop at the outer end and camber can move toward positive. On a coil sprung solid axle, the radius arms rotate the axle as the chassis rises, and caster drops. Both changes can show up as vague steering, poor self-centring and uneven tyre wear.
If the factory adjustment cannot bring the settings back into range, alignment bushes are often the first and simplest correction to try on a modest lift. A larger lift may need correction arms instead, since there is only so far a bush can move a pivot.
After a Heavy Y SERIES GTS Front Load
A bull bar and winch compress the front springs and can change the front geometry in a similar way to a lowered vehicle. Even with springs rated for the weight, the settings can sit at the edge of the factory range. Alignment bushes can give the technician enough adjustment to set the vehicle up for how it is actually loaded.
When the Y SERIES GTS Factory Range Is Not Enough
Some 4WDs have limited factory adjustment for camber or caster, or none at all on some axles. A vehicle with slight chassis or body variation, or one that has taken a hit, can need more adjustment than the factory parts allow. Alignment bushes can add it without replacing the arms.
What Types of Y SERIES GTS Alignment Bushes Are There?
Y SERIES GTS Fixed Offset Bushes
A fixed offset bush has its inner sleeve permanently off centre. It moves the pivot a set amount in a set direction, depending on which way round it is fitted. They are generally simple and robust, and suit a vehicle where the correction needed is known and does not change.
Y SERIES GTS Adjustable Bushes
Adjustable bushes use a cam, eccentric bolt or rotating insert so the pivot position can be fine-tuned during the alignment. They allow a technician to dial the settings in rather than choosing a fixed step, which helps when the vehicle's load or ride height may change later.
Y SERIES GTS Offset Radius Arm Bushes
On coil sprung solid axle 4WDs, offset bushes at the radius arm's axle or chassis end can rotate the axle slightly to bring caster back after a lift. This is one of the most common uses for alignment bushes on a 4WD. They generally suit modest lifts. Larger lifts tend to need a different arm or mount to bring caster back properly.
Bush Material
Alignment bushes are made in rubber and polyurethane. Polyurethane is generally firmer and holds an offset position more consistently under load, which is why many alignment bushes use it. Rubber typically gives a softer ride and absorbs more vibration. The right choice depends on the vehicle and how it is used.
How Do You Know Your Y SERIES GTS Needs Alignment Bushes?
The clearest sign comes from the alignment itself. If a technician sets the vehicle up and reports that camber or caster sits outside specification with the factory adjustment at its limit, the geometry needs correcting rather than adjusting.
On the road, the symptoms follow from the angles. Low caster tends to make steering light and vague at speed, with weak self-centring after a corner. Excess camber in either direction tends to wear one edge of the tyre faster than the other. A vehicle that pulls to one side after a lift or a load change can also point to geometry that is out of range.
Worn standard bushes cause some of the same symptoms, so an inspection is worth doing before deciding a geometry correction is needed. Fitting an offset bush to a vehicle that actually has a worn bush elsewhere only moves the problem.
Y SERIES GTS Lifted, Loaded and Towing Considerations
How Far a Bush Can Correct
An alignment bush can only move a pivot a few millimetres, and that limits how much correction it can deliver. On a modest lift it is often enough. On a bigger lift, the change in geometry can outrun what a bush can recover, and correction arms or relocated mounts are generally the more complete fix.
Load Changes
Alignment is set at one ride height. If the vehicle's load changes a lot, the geometry changes with it. A 4WD that alternates between empty daily driving and fully loaded touring may sit in a slightly different place each time. Adjustable bushes can make it easier to set the vehicle up for its most common use.
Towing With Your Y SERIES GTS
Towbar download lifts the front and reduces the weight on the steering axle, which can make low caster more noticeable. A vehicle that tows regularly benefits from caster that is comfortably within range rather than at its edge.
What Comes With Y SERIES GTS Alignment Bushes?
Kits vary by vehicle and arm. Some include the full set of bushes for one arm or one axle, while others supply only the offset bushes. Sleeves, cam bolts, washers and lubricant may or may not be included. Check the product details so you know what is supplied before the job is booked.
Should You Use Y SERIES GTS Alignment Bushes or Replace the Arms?
Alignment bushes make sense when the arms are straight and sound and the correction needed is modest. They are generally the less involved option, and they leave the factory arms in place.
Replacement arms make more sense when the arms are bent, worn or corroded, when the lift is large enough that a bush cannot recover the geometry, or when the vehicle needs more travel or clearance than the factory arms allow. A bent arm should always be replaced, not compensated for with an offset bush.
Fitting Y SERIES GTS Alignment Bushes
Fitting alignment bushes usually means removing the arm and pressing the old bushes out, so it is a job for a qualified technician. The vehicle goes on rated stands, the arm is removed, and the new bushes are pressed in with the offset facing the right direction. Getting that orientation wrong can move the geometry the wrong way.
The arm is refitted and the bush bolts are tightened at ride height, not with the suspension hanging, so the bushes are not preloaded. All fasteners are torqued to specification. A wheel alignment is required straight afterwards, since the whole point of the bushes is to change the settings, and a road test confirms the steering feel and tracking.
Find the Right Y SERIES GTS Alignment Bushes with Formula 4x4
Use the vehicle search, then start with an alignment report so you know which settings are out of range and by how much. Note any lift or front load the vehicle carries, decide between fixed and adjustable bushes, and check the product details for what is included. Book the wheel alignment for straight after fitting.
