Control arm and radius arm kits combine several suspension arms in one package, so the arms that locate a vehicle's wheels or axle can be replaced or upgraded together. On a 4WD, these arms carry heavy loads, take impacts off-road and determine the suspension geometry, so when one arm is worn or a lift has changed the angles, others often need attention too. A matched kit keeps the arms consistent with each other. Kits are specific to each vehicle, so use the vehicle search to find control arm and radius arm kits to suit your FG Ute GT SERIES.

FG Ute GT SERIES Control Arms and Radius Arms: What's the Difference?

Control arms are used on independent suspension. Each front wheel is held by an upper and a lower control arm, connected to the chassis through bushes and to the steering knuckle through ball joints. The arms pivot as the wheel moves up and down, and their geometry sets camber and caster.

Radius arms are used on coil-sprung live axles. They are long arms running from the axle back to the chassis, locating the axle fore and aft and setting its caster angle. A live axle typically has one radius arm on each side. Some vehicles use trailing arms instead, often in upper and lower pairs, to do a similar job.

The terms are sometimes mixed. On some road cars, the front lower arm or tension rod is also called a radius arm, though it is a different part from the radius arms on a live-axle 4WD.

Why Buy FG Ute GT SERIES Arms as a Kit?

A kit makes sense when several arms need replacing at once. Arms on the same vehicle have worked for the same distance under the same conditions, so their bushes and joints tend to wear at a similar rate. Replacing only one leaves new parts working alongside worn ones, which can make the suspension feel uneven and leave clunks or play.

When correcting geometry after a lift, arms often need to work together. On a live axle, both radius arms need the same correction so the axle sits square. On independent suspension, the left and right arms need to match for the alignment to be set evenly. A kit supplies arms designed to work as a set, which helps the alignment come out right.

FG Ute GT SERIES Kit or Individual Arms?

A kit suits a vehicle with several worn arms, a high-kilometre 4WD due for a front end refresh, or a lift that needs geometry correction on both sides. Individual arms suit a single fault, such as one arm bent in an off-road impact or one arm with a failed ball joint, where the others are in good condition.

When replacing a single arm, check the condition of the matching arm on the other side. If its bushes or joint are close to worn, replacing both together avoids a second alignment soon after the first.

Do You Need New Radius Arms After Lifting a Coil-Sprung FG Ute GT SERIES?

Often, yes. Lifting a coil-sprung live axle 4WD lowers the axle relative to the chassis, so the radius arms angle down more steeply. Because the arms are fixed to the axle, that rotation tilts the axle and reduces caster. Reduced caster can cause wander, lighter steering and poor return to centre.

Caster correction radius arms are designed to rotate the axle back and restore caster at the lifted ride height. They are typically made for a particular lift range, so match the arms to the lift. Offset radius arm bushes can provide a smaller correction, while correction arms suit larger lifts.

FG Ute GT SERIES Control Arms After a Lift

On independent front suspension 4WDs, a lift changes the angle of the upper and lower control arms, which can move caster and camber out of range and push the upper ball joint toward its limit at full droop. Replacement upper control arms with an offset or adjustable ball joint position are the most common correction.

Lower control arms are usually replaced when they are worn or damaged rather than as part of a lift, although some lifted setups use adjustable lower arms for additional range. Whether a vehicle needs new arms after a lift depends on the vehicle and lift height, so a wheel alignment check is the first step.

Signs Your FG Ute GT SERIES Arms Need Replacing

Common signs include clunks or knocks from the front end over bumps, steering that wanders or feels vague, and uneven tyre wear that returns after a wheel alignment. On live axle 4WDs, worn radius arm bushes can contribute to steering shake.

Inspect the arms for bends, cracks or damage, particularly after off-road impacts. Check the bushes for cracking or movement in their housings, and the ball joints for play and torn boots. A bent arm, worn bush or loose ball joint changes the wheel's geometry and should be addressed before the alignment is set.

Check the FG Ute GT SERIES Mounting Brackets Too

New arms are only as secure as the brackets they bolt to. Before fitting a kit, inspect the chassis and axle mounting brackets for cracks, elongated bolt holes, corrosion and impact damage. Radius arm mounts on the chassis and lower control arm brackets on independent suspension both take heavy loads off-road, and a damaged bracket can let a new arm move or wear its bushes quickly. Any damaged bracket should be repaired or replaced by a qualified workshop before the new arms go in.

FG Ute GT SERIES Radius Arm Shape and Fitment

Radius arms vary between vehicles, and sometimes between versions of the same vehicle. Some vehicles use straight arms, while others, or later builds of the same model, use curved arms shaped to clear other components. The mounting points, length and bush sizes also differ. Confirm your vehicle's exact build and suspension version before ordering, since an arm designed for one version will not fit another.

FG Ute GT SERIES Arm Kits and Bushes

Most arms are supplied with new bushes and, for control arms, new ball joints already fitted. That removes the need to press old bushes out and new ones in, and means every wear point on the arm is renewed at once. When an arm is still straight and only its bushes are worn, replacing the bushes alone can be an option, but a complete arm or kit is often simpler when several wear points need attention.

Fitting FG Ute GT SERIES Control Arm and Radius Arm Kits: An Overview

Fitting arm kits is safety-critical work and should be carried out by a qualified suspension technician. The vehicle is supported on rated stands, and each arm is disconnected from the axle or knuckle and the chassis before the new arm is fitted. On live axles, the axle must be supported while the radius arms are changed, since they locate it.

Pivot bolts should generally be tightened with the vehicle at normal ride height so the bushes are not preloaded, and all fasteners tightened to the manufacturer's torque specifications. Brake lines and ABS wiring should be checked for clearance. A wheel alignment is required after fitting.

Find the Right FG Ute GT SERIES Arm Kit with Formula 4x4

Start by identifying your vehicle's suspension type and exact build, and have the arms, bushes and joints inspected to see what needs replacing. If the vehicle is lifted, note the lift height and have the alignment checked. Search by your FG Ute GT SERIES to find control arm and radius arm kits to suit your FG Ute GT SERIES. If you are unsure what your 4WD needs, contact the Formula 4x4 team.
