Suspension bolts and hardware hold every suspension and driveline component in its correct position, so the condition of a single bolt can affect how the whole vehicle steers, rides and handles. On a 4WD, fasteners face constant vibration, heavy loads, water, mud and road salt, and they are often removed and refitted during lifts and suspension upgrades. Stretched, corroded or damaged hardware should be replaced rather than reused. Use the vehicle search to find suspension bolts and hardware to suit your AT, AV TELSTAR.

Why AT, AV TELSTAR Suspension Hardware Matters

A suspension bolt does more than hold two parts together. It clamps components with a specific force, set by the torque it is tightened to, and that clamping force keeps bushes, arms and brackets from moving against each other. When a bolt loses that clamping force, the parts it holds can shift under load, wearing the bolt holes, bushes and mounting brackets, and changing alignment.

Many suspension faults that appear to be worn components are actually loose or failed hardware. A clunk over bumps, a vehicle that pulls or wanders, or uneven tyre wear can all come from a bolt that has lost tension. Checking and replacing hardware is often a simple fix that prevents more expensive damage.

Types of AT, AV TELSTAR Suspension Hardware

Suspension hardware covers several types of fastener, each with a specific job.

AT, AV TELSTAR Camber and Strut Bolts

Camber bolts include an offset or cam section that allows camber to be adjusted. Some replace a standard strut-to-knuckle bolt to add adjustment where the factory design has little or none, and they are made in a range of diameters to suit different strut mounting holes. Strut bolts secure the strut to the knuckle or lower mount and carry significant load every time the suspension moves.

AT, AV TELSTAR Tailshaft and Driveline Bolts

Tailshaft bolts secure the tailshaft flanges to the gearbox, transfer case and differential. They carry the full drive torque and are subject to constant vibration, so they need to be the correct grade and tightened to the correct torque.

AT, AV TELSTAR Washers and Retaining Hardware

Washers spread clamping loads and locate bushes, while retaining hardware such as locking nuts, split pins and tab washers stops fasteners working loose. Sway bar link washers, for example, locate the bushes on each end of a link and keep them seated as the link moves.

When Should AT, AV TELSTAR Suspension Bolts Be Replaced?

Suspension bolts should generally be replaced when they show signs of stretch, corrosion, thread damage or bending, or when they were damaged during removal. A bolt that has stretched will often show a narrowed section, or threads that no longer run smoothly with a new nut. Heavy corrosion reduces the bolt's strength and can hide cracks.

Some fasteners are designed to be used only once. Torque-to-yield bolts are tightened to a point where they stretch slightly, which gives a precise clamping force, but once stretched they cannot be relied on to clamp correctly a second time. Vehicle manufacturers specify which fasteners must be replaced whenever they are removed, so check the manufacturer's guidance for each fastener before deciding whether to reuse it.

Can You Reuse AT, AV TELSTAR Suspension Bolts?

Sometimes. Standard bolts that are clean, straight, free of corrosion and have undamaged threads may be reusable, unless the vehicle manufacturer specifies otherwise. Torque-to-yield bolts, stretch-type fasteners and self-locking nuts that rely on a nylon insert or deformed thread to hold them usually need to be replaced.

If there is any doubt about a bolt's condition, fit new hardware. The cost of a replacement bolt is small compared with the cost of a component working loose, and on a safety-critical part such as a strut, control arm or tailshaft, reusing questionable hardware is not worth the risk.

Bolt Grades and Why They Matter

Bolts are made in different strength grades, marked on the head of the bolt. In metric fasteners, common property classes include 8.8 and 10.9, with the higher number indicating a stronger bolt. Suspension and driveline components are designed around a specific grade of fastener, chosen for the loads they carry.

Replacing a suspension bolt with a lower-grade bolt, even one of the same size and thread, can lead to stretching, bending or failure under load. When replacing hardware, match the grade, length, diameter and thread pitch of the original, or use the hardware specified for the replacement part. A bolt from a general hardware store may look the same but not meet the strength the component requires.

Corroded and Seized Bolts on Your AT, AV TELSTAR

Water crossings, mud, beach driving and road salt all accelerate corrosion on suspension hardware. Over time, bolts can seize inside bushes and sleeves, or rust to the point where the nut will not move. Seized bolts often have to be cut out during suspension work, which is why many installers plan to replace hardware when fitting a lift or replacing bushes.

Rinsing the underside of the vehicle after beach and mud driving helps slow corrosion. When refitting hardware, follow the manufacturer's guidance on lubricants or anti-seize compounds. These change how much clamping force a given torque produces, so they should only be used where the manufacturer allows, and the torque setting adjusted if specified.

Why Do AT, AV TELSTAR Tailshaft Bolts Come Loose?

Tailshaft bolts are under constant vibration and carry the full torque from the engine and gearbox. If they are not tightened to the correct torque, if the flange faces were not clean when assembled, or if reused hardware no longer holds its tension, the bolts can gradually loosen.

A loose tailshaft can cause a vibration that changes with speed, a clunk when taking off or changing gear, and eventually damage to the flanges or bolt holes. In the worst case, the tailshaft can separate from its flange while driving. Any vibration or clunk from the driveline should be checked promptly. When refitting a tailshaft, use the correct bolts, clean the flange faces, apply thread locker if the manufacturer specifies it, and tighten to the specified torque.

Do You Need New Bolts When Fitting a Lift to Your AT, AV TELSTAR?

It depends on the kit and the condition of the existing hardware. Many lift kits include new hardware where the design requires it, such as longer bolts or new U-bolts. Other fasteners are reused from the vehicle.

During fitting, installers often find bolts that are seized, corroded or damaged on removal, particularly on older vehicles or those that have spent time off-road and at the beach. Replacing that hardware while the suspension is apart is far simpler than dealing with a failed fastener later. Planning for some replacement hardware when budgeting a lift is sensible.

Tightening AT, AV TELSTAR Suspension Bolts Correctly

How a suspension bolt is tightened matters as much as the bolt itself. Fasteners should be tightened to the vehicle manufacturer's torque specification using a torque wrench. Under-tightened bolts can work loose, while over-tightened bolts can stretch or damage the threads.

Many suspension bolts that pass through rubber or polyurethane bushes should be tightened with the vehicle at normal ride height, with its weight on the wheels. Tightening them with the suspension hanging locks the bush in a twisted position, which loads it constantly once the vehicle is lowered and can shorten its life. Recheck suspension fasteners after the first few hundred kilometres following any suspension work.

Get the Right AT, AV TELSTAR Suspension Hardware with Formula 4x4
