A GVM upgrade increases a vehicle's gross vehicle mass, the maximum it can legally weigh when fully loaded. It suits 4WD and ute owners whose accessories, equipment and touring gear use up most or all of the factory payload, leaving little room for passengers, water, fuel and supplies. A GVM upgrade kit combines suspension components rated for the higher load with the engineering and approval process needed for the new figure to apply. Use the vehicle search to find GVM upgrades to suit your 79 Series LAND CRUISER.

What Is GVM on Your 79 Series LAND CRUISER?

Gross vehicle mass, or GVM, is the maximum the vehicle may weigh when fully loaded, as set by the manufacturer. It includes the vehicle itself, all fitted accessories, fuel, passengers, cargo and the tow ball download from any trailer. The factory figure is listed in the owner's manual and on the vehicle's compliance information.

Payload is the difference between the vehicle's kerb weight and its GVM. Every accessory fitted to the vehicle comes out of that payload, before any passengers or gear are added. Axle load limits also apply, so a vehicle can be within its GVM overall and still exceed the limit on its front or rear axle if weight is concentrated at one end.

What Is a 79 Series LAND CRUISER GVM Upgrade?

A GVM upgrade raises the vehicle's approved gross vehicle mass above the factory figure. It is made up of two parts that both need to be in place. The first is the hardware, typically springs and shock absorbers rated to carry and control the higher load at the correct ride height. The second is the approval process, which confirms that the upgraded vehicle meets the relevant requirements and records the new figure.

Fitting heavier springs without the approval process does not raise the vehicle's legal GVM, however much weight the suspension can physically carry. Equally, the approval depends on the specified components being fitted. A GVM upgrade only applies once both are complete.

Does Your 79 Series LAND CRUISER Need a GVM Upgrade?

Many 4WDs reach their GVM sooner than their owners expect. A bull bar, winch, side steps, roof rack, canopy, drawers, dual battery system, fridge, water tanks and recovery gear can together use up a large share of the factory payload. Add passengers, fuel, food, camping gear and the tow ball download from a caravan or trailer, and many touring setups exceed the factory GVM.

The only reliable way to know is to weigh the vehicle. Load it as you normally travel, with passengers, fuel and gear, and weigh it at a public weighbridge, ideally measuring each axle as well as the total. If the result is close to or over the factory GVM, or close to an axle limit, a GVM upgrade may be worth considering. If the vehicle is well within its limits, a correctly rated suspension upgrade may be enough.

What a 79 Series LAND CRUISER GVM Upgrade Kit Typically Includes

GVM upgrade kits are engineered for a specific vehicle, so contents vary between kits. They typically include springs rated for the upgraded GVM, matched shock absorbers valved to control those springs, and any supporting hardware the vehicle requires. They also come with the documentation needed for the approval and certification process. Check the listed contents for your vehicle's kit before ordering, and confirm whether it is designed as a pre-registration or post-registration upgrade.

79 Series LAND CRUISER GVM Upgrades With Lift

Some GVM upgrade kits include a suspension lift as part of the engineered package. The springs and shocks carry the higher rated load while also raising ride height for extra ground clearance and room for larger tyres. This suits owners who need the extra payload and also drive off-road. Because the lift height forms part of the approved package, it should not be altered afterwards without checking how the change affects the approval.

79 Series LAND CRUISER Adjustable Options

Some GVM upgrade kits use adjustable shock absorbers, including remote reservoir designs. Adjustability lets damping be tuned for the difference between driving empty and fully loaded, while a remote reservoir adds oil capacity to help resist heat build-up on long, rough or corrugated roads. These options suit vehicles that alternate between light daily use and heavily loaded touring.

79 Series LAND CRUISER Pre-Rego vs Post-Rego GVM Upgrades

GVM upgrades are carried out either before or after the vehicle is first registered, and the difference matters.

A pre-registration upgrade is fitted and approved before the vehicle is registered for the first time. Because the higher GVM is part of the vehicle's compliance from the outset, it is generally the simpler path. It usually needs to be arranged at the time of purchase, before the vehicle is delivered and registered.

A post-registration upgrade is carried out on a vehicle that is already registered. It usually requires engineering approval and certification under the requirements of the state or territory where the vehicle is registered, and the new GVM may need to be recorded with the registration authority. Requirements differ between states and change over time, so check the process for your vehicle with the installer and your registration authority before committing.

79 Series LAND CRUISER GVM vs GCM: What's the Difference?

GVM covers the vehicle alone, including the tow ball download from a trailer. Gross combination mass, or GCM, covers the loaded vehicle and loaded trailer together. The two limits are separate, and raising one does not automatically raise the other.

This matters for owners who tow. Raising GVM lets the vehicle carry more, but if GCM stays the same, a heavier vehicle leaves less of the combined limit available for the trailer. Some owners find that a GVM upgrade lets them carry their gear but reduces how heavy a trailer they can legally tow. Check both figures, and which one your setup is closest to, before choosing an upgrade.

Does a GVM Upgrade Increase Your 79 Series LAND CRUISER Towing Capacity?

Not on its own. Braked towing capacity, the towbar rating and the maximum tow ball download are separate ratings from GVM, and a GVM upgrade does not change them unless the upgrade has been engineered and approved to do so. As explained above, if GCM is unchanged, a higher GVM can even reduce the trailer weight available within the combined limit. Confirm all of the relevant figures for your vehicle after the upgrade.

Other Things to Check Before Upgrading Your 79 Series LAND CRUISER

Tyres must carry a load rating suited to the upgraded axle loads, so check yours before relying on the new GVM. If the upgrade takes the vehicle's GVM above 4,500 kg, a light rigid licence may be required rather than a car licence, depending on the state. Modifications can also affect vehicle manufacturer warranty coverage, and insurers generally expect a GVM upgrade to be declared. Check each of these before committing, and keep all upgrade documentation with the vehicle.

Fitting and Certifying a 79 Series LAND CRUISER GVM Upgrade: An Overview

GVM upgrades are generally fitted and signed off by an approved installer, since the certification depends on the specified components being fitted correctly. Fitting involves replacing the suspension components set out in the kit, setting ride height, completing a wheel alignment and carrying out any inspections or checks the approval process requires.

The paperwork is as important as the parts. Make sure the installer explains what certification documentation is produced, what needs to be lodged with the registration authority, and when the upgraded GVM can legally be used. Until the process is complete, the factory GVM still applies.

Towing heavy as well? A GCM upgrade raises the combined limit for the vehicle and trailer together.

Start by weighing your vehicle as you normally travel, including each axle, and compare the results with the factory figures. Decide whether a pre-registration or post-registration upgrade suits your situation, and check how it affects GCM and towing. Search by your 79 Series LAND CRUISER to find GVM upgrades to suit it.
