Read moreA recovery hitch provides a dedicated rear attachment point for recovering a stuck 4WD, rather than relying on a tow ball or an unsuitable towing connection. Designed to fit a compatible towbar receiver, it creates a connection for approved recovery equipment when the complete vehicle setup is suitable for the loads involved.
Formula 4x4's recovery hitch is supplied with a soft shackle for compatible recovery applications. Before use, it's important to check the receiver, towbar and hitch ratings, as the hitch alone does not determine the recovery capacity of the vehicle.
What Is a Rear Recovery Hitch?
A rear recovery hitch is a purpose-designed attachment that fits into a compatible towbar receiver to provide a connection point for vehicle recovery equipment. Unlike a conventional towing attachment, its function is to connect suitable recovery ropes or shackles to the vehicle during an approved recovery operation.
A 4WD recovery hitch generally uses a solid metal body with a shaped opening or connection area designed for compatible recovery equipment. It is secured within the receiver using an appropriate hitch pin and retaining mechanism.
This type of rear recovery point can be useful when a vehicle becomes stuck in sand, mud or uneven terrain and a suitable rearward recovery is required. However, the presence of a recovery hitch does not automatically make the towbar or receiver suitable for recovery.
The supporting vehicle structure and every connecting component must be approved for the intended loads and recovery method.
Why Shouldn't You Recover from a Tow Ball?
Tow balls are designed to connect trailers to vehicles for towing. They are not intended to serve as attachment points for kinetic recovery ropes or other equipment that can generate substantial recovery forces.
During a vehicle-assisted recovery, a rope can stretch and release stored energy as the stuck vehicle begins to move. These forces may be significantly different from those experienced during ordinary trailer towing.
If a tow ball or its mounting components fail, detached metal hardware can become a dangerous projectile. This creates a serious risk to people near the recovery area.
A purpose-designed recovery hitch provides an alternative connection where the receiver and vehicle arrangement are approved for recovery use. It must still be matched to suitable recovery equipment and operated within the manufacturer's specified limits.
Never attach a kinetic recovery rope or snatch strap directly to a tow ball.
Will a Recovery Hitch Fit Your Towbar?
Not every recovery hitch fits every towbar. Receiver dimensions, pin compatibility and the supporting towbar design all affect whether a hitch can be installed and used correctly.
Before ordering, confirm the receiver dimensions and check the manufacturer's compatibility requirements. A hitch that physically slides into a receiver is not necessarily approved for recovery with that towbar.
Receiver Size and Compatibility
The recovery hitch covered by this category is designed for a compatible 50 mm ? 50 mm square receiver, with the product specification referencing AS4177.
Check the receiver's internal dimensions and condition before fitting the hitch. Dirt, corrosion, deformation or damage can interfere with correct installation.
Receiver size alone does not establish recovery suitability. The towbar and its mounting arrangement must also be approved for the intended recovery loads.
Hitch Pins and Orientation
A recovery hitch is retained in the receiver using a suitable hitch pin and securing mechanism. The pin must match the receiver and hitch requirements and be appropriate for the loads involved.
Some recovery hitch designs permit vertical or horizontal installation. The applicable product specification identifies these mounting options, but the manufacturer's instructions should determine the approved orientation for use.
Never substitute an unsuitable pin or modify the hitch to achieve a fit.
How Do You Match the Recovery Hitch Rating to Your Towbar?
A recovery hitch may carry its own working load limit, but that rating applies to the hitch under specified conditions. It does not automatically become the allowable recovery load for the complete vehicle.
The recovery arrangement also depends on the receiver, towbar, mounting hardware, hitch pin and supporting vehicle structure.
Working load limit (WLL) is the maximum load the manufacturer permits a component to carry under its specified working conditions. Different components may have different ratings and limitations, so the complete arrangement must be assessed rather than relying on the hitch rating alone.
The lowest applicable component rating can restrict the allowable load, but recovery forces, loading direction and manufacturer restrictions must also be considered. A towing capacity figure should not be treated as a recovery rating unless the manufacturer explicitly approves that use.
Check your vehicle and towbar documentation, including any restrictions on recovery applications. If the receiver's suitability or rating is unclear, consult a qualified technician before using a recovery hitch.
Alloy or Steel Recovery Hitch: What's the Difference?
Recovery hitches can be manufactured from aluminium alloy or steel. Both materials can be suitable for recovery applications when the component is properly designed, rated and used within its approved limits.
An aluminium alloy recovery hitch generally weighs less than a comparable steel design, making it easier to carry, install and remove. This can be useful for equipment that is fitted only when needed.
Steel recovery hitches are typically heavier and may differ in their resistance to surface damage, depending on the material, finish and construction.
However, material alone does not determine strength or recovery suitability. A correctly engineered alloy hitch may have a different rating from a steel alternative, and neither should be judged by appearance or weight.
Choose according to the manufacturer's stated load rating, receiver compatibility, approved connections and intended recovery method rather than assuming one material is always stronger.
How Do You Use a Recovery Hitch with Soft Shackles?
A soft shackle is a flexible connector made from high-strength synthetic fibres. When used with a compatible recovery hitch, it can provide a connection between approved recovery equipment and the hitch's designated attachment area.
Formula 4x4's recovery hitch is supplied with a soft shackle, making it important to understand the requirements of both components.
The hitch's connection surface must be suitable for synthetic fibres, without sharp edges or damage that could cut or abrade the shackle. The soft shackle must also be correctly positioned and used according to its manufacturer's instructions.
Before a recovery, inspect the hitch, shackle and other equipment for wear or damage. Confirm that the receiver and all attachment components are approved for the intended loading arrangement.
Keep bystanders well clear of the recovery area and use any line protection or damping equipment specified for the recovery method. Recovery operations should be carried out by people familiar with the equipment and appropriate recovery procedures.
A soft shackle should not be used with an incompatible connection simply because it can physically fit around the attachment point.
Should You Leave a Recovery Hitch Installed?
A recovery hitch does not necessarily need to remain fitted when the vehicle is not being recovered. Removing it between trips or after use can help protect the connection surfaces from unnecessary exposure to dirt, road debris and damage.
It also allows the hitch and retaining pin to be inspected before their next use.
If the hitch remains installed, check that it is securely retained and does not create an unsafe rear projection or interfere with other vehicle equipment. Applicable road rules and vehicle requirements should also be considered.
When removed, clean the hitch and store it with its compatible accessories in a dry, protected location. Inspect the body, attachment surfaces and pin for deformation, cracks, corrosion or other damage before reinstalling it.
Any component that has been overloaded or damaged should be removed from service in accordance with the manufacturer's instructions.
